It was 2015, when I left my cushy hospital job.
I had enough of the 7-minute visits and the insurance companies and hospital administrators telling my how to practice medicine. At the time, I was beginning to expand our telemedicine services, I was
already helping patients online, but I knew I
still needed a place to hall home. Despite searching for quite some time, looking at
office buildings, and medical offices, there was something missing. Yes, they we are all very fancy and nice, but they all seemed too sterile.
Then one day, I was driving past a strip mall near my childhood home and noticed that the space where Anna’s Chocolates used to be
was still vacant…It was at that moment that it dawned on me… THIS was exactly where I was going to start. This chocolate store was part of my childhood struggle with obesity. We were
all too familiar with Anna’s Chocolates…the sweet smells and delicious tastes…
I thought, just like I was given a new beginning with my weight loss journey, losing 150lbs, this vacant retail space that was once Anna’s Chocolates needed a new beginning. So this formerly obese weight loss doctor transformed the formerly delicious (but diabetogenic) chocolate store into a weight loss & lifestyle medicine clinic.
No, it’s not a fancy medical building, but it’s serving its purpose quite well, and it has a special meaning to me. This is our home. This is where our team of doctors., medical assistants, health coaches and trainers care for countless patients nationwide.
Despite our focus on telemedicine, we built our headquarters to accommodate the people who needed us the most. No chairs had armrests, all the furniture was rated to accommodate up to 1000lbs, nobody was forced to get on a scale ever. Our goal was, back then and is today, to make our services a safe, non-judgemental path towards healing.
