PALISADES, NY, January 8, 2020 —When Tro Kalayjian weighed 350 pounds just five years ago, running even a very short distance seemed impossible.
Last month, shortly after completing a 5k race (3.1 miles) in under 20 minutes for the second consecutive year, the Board Certified Obesity and Internal Medicine physician said “Most of us have no idea what is possible. We literally have no comprehension of what we can accomplish if we have the right advice and a proper plan.”
In July, Kalayjian will host the inaugural Low Carb New York 2020 Conference, something that also seemed impossible not long ago.
The groundbreaking conference—organized by Kalayjian in partnership with Intensive Dietary Management/The Fasting Method (IDM/TFM) & LowCarbUSA—will feature keynotes and presentations from some of the field’s leading experts and medical professionals.
Kalayjian opened Dr. Tro’s Medical Weight Loss & Direct Primary Care in Tappan, NY in February 2019, and the demand for his medical program, which most often utilizes a low-carb, ketogenic, and fasting approach to weight loss and disease reversal, has been incredibly strong.
Kalayjian, who is best known simply as Dr. Tro, has also become well known for his role as co-host host of the popular Low Carb MD Podcast, which surpassed a million downloads in its first year, and is currently the No. 5 medical podcast on iTunes.
“It won’t be long before we reach our 100th episode, and our audience continues to grow,” said Kalayjian. “I am frequently asked to speak at events in the local community, which I do as my schedule permits, but it has become clear there is demand for a full-fledged conference, and that is what we are going to provide with Low Carb New York.”
The idea of organizing a conference seemed imposing to Kalayjian at first, but he looked for help from individuals who already had experience orchestrating successful low carb conferences in other parts of the country. Kalayjian was able to leverage the experience of IDM/TFM co-founder Megan Ramos and LowCarbUSA co-founder and CEO Doug Reynolds.
Low Carb New York will be held July 16-19, 2020, at the HNA Palisades Premier Conference Center in Palisades, NY, just 20 minutes north of New York City. More information is available on the conference website, LowCarbNewYork.com. Early bird pricing is available for a limited time. Purchase tickets here: www.eventbrite.com
The conference will feature keynotes and presentations from some of the field’s leading experts and medical professionals. In addition to Kalayjian, the list of speakers includes Ramos, Brian Lenzkes, Nadia Pateguana, Ben Bickman, Nina Teicholz, Nadir Ali, Christian Assad,, Evelyne Bourdua-Roy, Ted Naiman, Robert Cywes, and Terri Lance.
The conference is open to all, including the general public, health, nutrition and fitness enthusiasts, the scientific community, policymakers and healthcare professionals. Continuing Medical Education (CME) up to 14 hours is available for healthcare professionals.
“When you look at the data, the diets that are lowest in processed carbohydrates, and lowest in sugars are the diets that help people lose weight and fix their diabetes,” said Kalayjian, who used a low carb way of eating and fasting to lose more than 150 pounds.
“I weighed 350 pounds and found myself completely bewildered, Kalayjian said. “Despite all my education, I didn’t know how to lose weight. It was frustrating and challenging because the standard advice was ‘Eat less and move more,’ and that advice never worked, I went back to the medical textbooks and I started to look into the literature.”
Over the past four years, Kalayjian has read more than 1,000 nutrition studies and papers, and more than 100 books about nutrition, It wasn’t long before he realized most physicians practicing today do not have sufficient training in nutrition and are unable to help patients lose weight or reverse disease.
“The Low Carb New York conference is designed to bring together medical professionals and other experts who have the knowledge, experience, and insights that will help us overcome the problems that caused this epidemic of obsesity and metabolic disease in the first place,” said Kalayjian.
“We’ve seen the benefits of therapeutic fasting and low carbohydrate diets in our work with more than 10,000 people worldwide,” said Ramos, who co-founded IDF/TFM with Dr. Jason Fung, MD.
Ramos was diagnosed with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NALFD) at age 12, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) at age 14, and Type 2 diabetes at age 27. She reversed these metabolic conditions and achieved an 86-pound weight loss by combining intermittent fasting with a low carb diet, and is now passionate about helping others do the same.
“I’ve been extremely fortunate to be able to help educate thousands of people online,” said Ramos. “At IDM/TFM we help people worldwide lose weight and eliminate unnecessary medications with the assistance of their doctors. In some cases, I have even helped women, who have been told they are infertile due to PCOS complications, have babies with the education provided through video chat.
“As rewarding as it is to help people online, I am always enthusiastic when I have the opportunity to speak to people face to face at conferences such as this one. We know there is a large demand for education on these topics in the New York area, and we’re hoping this will be the first of many conferences we hold there.”
Doug Reynolds, the founder and CEO of LowCarbUSA, also has firsthand knowledge of the power of the ketogenic lifestyle. “I started gaining weight as I approached 40,” said Reynolds who had run nearly a hundred marathons and ultras. “I was gaining weight each year, regardless of how hard I trained. Ultimately, I was getting injured, and I began to hate running.”
Soon after adopting a keto lifestyle, Reynolds dropped the weight and his injuries resolved. “I am back down to the weight I was when I was 30,” Reynolds said, “and my recovery after training is better than it has ever been. I am now committed to helping to reverse the current consensus on diet here in the US and around the world. Low Carb New York 2020 will help us move closer to that objective.”
